Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of basketball's all-time greatest players, announced Tuesday morning that he has cancer. The sports legend made the public disclosure nearly a year after being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.

"Having lost one of my closest friends to a different, highly aggressive form of leukemia, I knew how serious my diagnosis was," said Abdul-Jabbar, 62. "My own life expectancy became a question mark."

Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring in 1989. He was diagnosed with CML in December 2008 and is being treated with a medicine that targets the abnormal protein that causes his leukemia. With treatment, Abdul-Jabbar, who currently is a coach with the Lakers, is expected to live a full, active life.

The intensely private Abdul-Jabbar, a father of five, said he came forward after learning many patients don't regularly take their medication and skip appointments to the doctor.

"I'm telling my story to encourage fellow patients to take charge of their health," he said. "Work closely with your doctor, monitor your disease and, above all, take your medicine."

This probably comes with a huge helping of YMMV.

Author, sweetie. I love your story. I really do. It's compelling, the characters are IC, the plot is a favorite of mine. But here's my problem: About 30 chapters into your epic, all of a sudden you change your tone, voice and point of view so that this one character can share this long and involved history. This history of his is in its own chapter and when copied to Word is 15 pages long. I have been jarred completely out of your story. I'm going to finish reading, but I'm insanely confused. I know you could have dropped this information throughout your story instead of devoting an entire chapter to an info dump. I know you could have handled the whole thing so much better than simply cramming all of it into one chapter in a different style, voice and point of view. If this random change of style/voice/pov/etc. was something consistent throughout your story, I'd forgive you. But it's not.

Not even Jerry O'Connell's bare backside could save it.

Despite JOC telling us he was just shooting some "sexy scenes" last night on the set of Eastwick, the news has broken that his wife Rebecca Romijn's series is a goner. ABC has confirmed that no new episodes will be produced beyond the original 13-episode commitment.

So this means Lost is a shoo-in to come back to Wednesday nights, right?

Maybe not.

ABC insiders tell me another series might be headed for that cushy slot, and its star happens to rock a mean Guadalajara poncho...

According to sources, ABC higher-ups are considering moving Ugly Betty to Wednesdays at 10 in January as part of a flashy relaunch of the show in an effort to save it. The thinking is that Betty would complement new hits Modern Family and Cougar Town nicely, and make ABC a solid destination for comedy on Wednesday night.

Nothing has been decided, but I'm told this is one option on the table.

"Honest to god, they haven't given us a date yet," Lost boss Damon Lindelof recently told USA Today. "I don't even know what night it's going to be on. We've been on Wednesday at 9 for a while, but now ABC's comedies are actually working. And I actually like Modern Family and Cougar Town, so I'm not sure that they'll move them."

No word yet on where Lost will go if Betty gets Eastwick's Wednesday slot.

According to insiders, Betty also has a creative resurgence in the works, including an episode in the spirit of Run Lola Run in which Betty must race across town to deliver a diamond-encrusted bra, which sounds pretty exciting. ABC execs asked producers to move the episode up to an earlier date because they liked it so much, according to my mole.

What do you think of Betty taking the Wednesday slot? Where should Lost go? And is it time to stick a fork in Betty, or are you hoping for more?

Source

Totally called it. As a fan of Modern Family (who is is often forced to sit through Cougar Town as well), I've been wanting this to happen. Figured they might as well keep all the comedies on one night. And hey, since NBC gave Leno 10:00, and since Always Sunny's season will be over by then... anybody else open to Lost on Thursdays?

Late Breaking News…

This just in…

You know that OLDBOY remake…well it wasn’t really a remake, anyway (which is a terrible idea by the way) Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were suppose to do a film that was based on the Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya and NOT FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM.

At the time DreamWorks was in the process of securing the rights along with MANDATE, until NOW.

According to a trusted source…

…It’s DEAD!

Mandate and DreamWorks didn’t see eye to eye therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away.

No Spielberg.

No Will Smith.

THEY’RE OUT!

Hence no stateside Oldboy remake…or whatever you want to call it.

Stay tuned as more develops.

You guys should be hearing something in the trades soon.

Source

Great news. I suppose it's likely that someone else will try to remake this in the future (regardless if it's based on the manga or not, it's still being made to cash in on the original film), but that's for another day. If that's the case, hopefully it'll be a director who's not afraid to shy away from the the film's more shocking moments.

During our visit to Pinewood Studios, we finally had a chance to talk to Jake late on Day Two as he had been the busiest of the cast, being the lead and all. He had mostly been filming a pivotal scene with Sir Ben Kingsley on the main unit that was considered a plot spoiler, so we didn't get to watch him in action, but while Jake has played a lot of serious dramatic roles, his cheery demeanor when faced with the group of journalists made it obvious he was clearly having fun making this movie. Apparently, he'd also been doing an accent for the movie but after greeting us with his British accent, he dropped and reverted to his normal California-influenced one.

Glee –noun 1. open delight or pleasure; exultant joy; exultation.

I've never made a Glee picspam and, honestly, I'm wondering why. The prettiness is all over this show and the plotline is not as shallow as I first though it would have been. I'm loving it more and more as it progresses. I know that there are a LOT of Glee picspams out there, but this is my first, and I had a lot of fun making it :) Plus, I can't wait for the next episode and this is my way to survive during the waiting! :D

Paul W.S. Anderson promised fans a few familiar faces would definitely be returning for Resident Evil: Afterlife. Ali Larter has returned as Claire Redfield, then there is Spencer Locke's K-Mart. From the video game series? Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) and Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts).

Well, how about Jill Valentine? That's right. Star Milla Jovovich dropped a Tweeter via her Twitter account earlier today that said: "Valentine MAY be back."

We haven't seen that character on the screen since Sienna Guillory played her in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Insiders told me during Resident Evil: Extinction's production that Guillory didn't return over contract disputes. Is the actress back or have they re-cast Valentine? We'll see.

Jovovich also had something to say about Afterlife's undead today. "The zombie makeup is exceptionally good now, they're rocking it over at prosthetics. But depending on the zombie and what happens to them, sometimes they add stuff to them in post."

*crosses fingers that she does return*

Making the long trip overseas, the stars of “New Moon” turned up at the Crillon Hotel in Paris, France on Monday night (November 9).

Having flown in from Los Angeles, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner greeted a pack of awaiting fans as they posed for a few pictures and signed autographs before checking into their rooms.

As for “New Moon,” which hits theaters on November 20th, Miss Stewart recently spoke about her Bella Swan character’s interactions with Robert’s Edward Cullen role.

“For Bella in this film, Edward leaving her is like physical withdrawal. She is an addict when it comes to this boy. I have a breakup scene with Rob in the movie, but that’s not what intimidated me. It was the absence of him that was scary.”

While the heterosexualized poster for Tom Ford’s not-so-heterosexual “A Single Man” caused a wee stir last week, it seems the recently released trailer has just re-enforced those complaints.

A comparative study of the trailer that Tom Ford’s production company released as the film premiered in Venice and Toronto and the trailer The Weinstein Company just put out tells quite the tale. The new trailer uses the same music and mostly the same shots, except it adds in a bunch of quotes that not-so-subtly emphasize the film’s Oscar buzz, leaving out a few choice shots - pretty much all of which are suggestive of the film’s gay content.

The new trailer essentially is altered to suggest the core of the film is the relationship between Colin Firth and Julianne Moore’s characters, even removing from the end of the trailer the names of both Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult (who play Firth’s love interests). Moreover, in the first trailer, we see Firth’s character kiss both Goode and Moore, in the second we just get Moore. There’s also a sequence of shots in the first trailer which crosscuts Firth, who plays a professor in the film, staring into the eyes of both a female student and a male student. In the second, as you might guess, we only get the female (in a telling twist, instead of cutting to the male eyes, the trailer cuts to a quote from Entertainment Weekly saying “[Firth’s] performance is bound to win attention in this year’s Oscar race”).

Gone completely in the new trailer are a few shots of Firth running into the smoking (literally and figuratively) male prostitute outside a liquor store (one of the film’s more homoerotic sequences), as well as a few shots of him and Hoult running romantically and shirtlessly into the ocean together.

Take a look for yourself:

Trailers behind the cut. )
In with the Oscar buzz, out with the gayness. It seems The Weinstein Company doesn’t want to take any chances with all those homophobic Academy members. Call it the “Brokeback Mountain” approach (and remember how well that worked out).

2.3 million viewers tune in for finale

The drama that enveloped Sterling Cooper was good for business -- AMC's business. "Mad Men" wrapped its third season on a strong note, drawing 2.3 million viewers for Sunday's finale.

Viewership for the Lionsgate TV skein was up 33% from last season's finale aud of 1.7 million, according to prelim Nielsens. It also marked the show's second-highest rating of the season behind the series-record 2.8 million who turned out for the third season opener in August.

For its third season overall, "Mad Men" averaged 1.8 million viewers, up 20% from last year's 1.5 million. The period drama starring Jon Hamm, January Jones and Elisabeth Moss saw surges of 20% in adults 18-49 (845,000 vs. 705,000) and 26% in adults 25-54 (982,000 vs. 780,000) compared to its second-season averages.

Show, which captured its second consecutive Emmy for best drama in September, continues to command an upscale aud, with roughly half of its adults 25-54 audience this season having a household income of $100,000 or higher. And on iTunes, season three of "Mad Men" had the best-selling season pass of the year.
